One small but impactful way I have simplified is by ridding my life of lace up winter boots. I really, really hate tying up winter boots. It’s a small labour but one that was tedious. I think pregnancy was probably the straw that did it. It’s not pretty, all bundled up, struggling to reach your boots. As a kindergarten teacher, repeatedly dressing for outdoor duty while helping 30 kids get into snowsuits, boots were a task I dreaded. And now that I am a parent, forget it! So as a gift to myself last year, I bought boots I can slip on. Who would have thought it would be something that has brought me so much happiness. Slip on boots are a form of self care as far as I’m concerned.
Maybe you share my disdain for extra struggle in winter? I think we all need a little extra help to get through several months of less light and cold. One of the ways I work to enjoy winter is by getting outside. Being warm and having the gear to help you enjoy your time outdoors helps. And keeping that as simple as possible. I have put together a list of 11 great options you can slip on.
There are a few criteria I looked for.
- The obvious one, are they slip on boots?
- Are they nice and light? I used to own a pair of Sorels and what made me crazy was how heavy they were. My feet and legs would get tired from dragging them around.
- Price, all are under $300, most being under $200. A pair of winter boots that will last you a few seasons or more are a bit of an investment.
- Simplicity. I like a simple aesthetic so none of these are very fussy in appearance. The choices are mainly neutral, so they could work with any coat.
1. Bogs
These are what I bought last year, simple, black and affordable. They are reasonably lightweight, easy to wipe clean and will match almost any coat. I can just slide my feet in, no hands required! $155 CDN
2. Uggs
These are a nice low cut boot, waterproof and super warm! They aren’t bulky and the price tag isn’t too bad either. If I could buy again, I would choose these. $225 CDN
3. Baffin
These are beautiful. Tall, textured and great quality. They don’t look like bulky winter boots but they are warm and waterproof. Baffin is a great company, that makes incredibly warm boots. $119 CDN on sale.
4. Columbia
Sporty and plush, they look so comfy! Waterproof and cozy with a clever pocket and lots of colour choice. Nice mid height and they don’t look like they’d drag you down. $120 CDN on sale.
5. Hunter
These are nice and tall, so you get extra warmth on your legs for those super cold days. Neat little cinch at the top to keep in warmth and a nub at the back to make taking them off easier. I also love the colour, it is nice to find winter items that are not black. $185 CDN
6. Bogs
These are super cute. Easy on, low and not too bulky. If you live somewhere really snowy, these would not be enough. But if you live somewhere that gets really wet and chilly, these would be great. Fuzzy on the inside and very simple. $85 CDN
7. Kamik
These are a lace up but without the tying. There is an adjustable bungee for lacing, so you can snug them up if necessary. They are warm up to -30 and tall, so great for playing outside with kids, shovelling snow or taking walks in a fresh snowfall. Lots of colour choice as well. $115 CDN
8. L.L.Bean
These were my top pick last year but they were out of my size. Slip on, lightweight, sherling lined and well made in the U.S. (not china!). Classic style and should wear nicely for years to come. Most pricey option but definitely nice to buy things that are not made in China. $285 CDN
9. L.L.Bean
Second offering from L.L.Bean. These are such a great colour! Tall, insulated and very lightweight. They look like they would be really cozy and the idea of primaloft boot is exciting, no heavy boot slowing you down. Zip up, which still beats laces. $200 CDN.
10. Geox
These are super styling, great city boot. Love the faux fur and it makes them feel less like a winter boot. Great waterproof protection and warmth but on the pricier end at $240 CDN.
11. Manitobah Mukluks
Okay, I lied there’s 11 choices. I couldn’t not include these amazing Canadian made, some indigenous made, boots. Waterproof, incredibly warm and ethically made. I was fortunate enough to get a pair second hand for my daughter, they are wonderful boots. Well worth the cost as you will have them for years. $240 CDN
I have found it really is the simple things; the little conveniences and the small successes, that bring so much happiness. I really do still feel happy a year later, when I slip on my boots. I hope by sharing this simple life hack, you get a little joy as well. Happy exploring!
